As I’m sure you are all aware, due to the Coronavirus there’s a lot of uncertainty about what’s happening across the country, and a lot can change day to day, so I shall try to keep this website updated, however please to aware that the information is this article may not be the most up-to-date advice. Monday General and Wednesday Advanced club nights at St Ursula’s have stopped with immediate effect due to the hall being closed for the foreseeable future.

Beaufort Park club nights at Kingsdown will continue as long as the leisure centre remains open.

Those members that wish to continue playing against current social distancing recommendations may do so, however it is an entirely individual decision.

Please check that the leisure centre is still open before travelling.

Also, if you aren’t already aware, all Bristol league fixtures are cancelled with immediate effect.

Hello! I hope everyone is having a good summer!

The time has come around to submit your interest into playing league matches for the next season, usually starting end of September and ending around April time.

By filling this out, you are not committing to anything, nor are we guaranteeing any selections. Those that have joined us for the summer season, are more than welcome to fill out the form if you are interested and are likely to continue playing with us through the winter season.

As you may be aware from previous years, team selections aren’t the easiest to manage and very difficult to please everyone. However, we might be running things a little different to try and accomodate the usual oversubscribed interest.

Our proposed idea is that instead of having a team of 4 (plus reserves) is to have a squad of maybe about 6 or 7 (plus reserves), and everyone playing a equal number of games. Everyone will still play the majority of games (about 6-8 out of 10) but we can accomodate more players by doing so.

We thought this could work because most teams will have the occassional sub in anyway, but allows someone that might originally only able to make say 5 games, part of the team, instead of being a reserve and just hoping that someone drops out.

If we do decide to go through with this, it will not neccessarily mean all teams will have a squad of 6 or 7. This will be highly dependent on the abilities of the individuals and the selected teams. For example, if we think that there are only 4 players up to the standard of division 1, we will keep it as a team of 4.

We are still discussing this, so your input would be appreciated if you have any thoughts or concerns about it.

Mid Glos League

It has come to our attention, that interest for the Mid Glos league has dropped significantly and unfortunately there will NOT be a Men’s division next season.
Regarding the mixed league, they are still awaiting responses from some clubs, but the probability is very high that there will, at best, only be a single division. This is dependent on discussion at the AGM about the future of the league.
Please do still register your interest for the Mid Glos mixed league as we will relay information onto you as we hear from them.

To those that play in the Beaufort Park section at Kingsdown Sports Centre, Kingsdown have changed their car park restrictions.

The old policy meant that you would only have to register your car registration plate if you were parking for more than 3 hours.

The new policy in force from 15th June will require all users to register their cars every time they use the car park regardless of the length of time they use the centre/facilities.

There will be a tablet installed just passed the gated entry system where users must enter their registration numbers.

There is also a maximum stay of 4 hours.

Beaufort Club are not responsible for any of this and can not help with any claims if you do get a ticket, so please get into the habit of registering your car every time you park.

One hundred years marks a very special occasion being one of the oldest established clubs in the country!

To celebrate this milestone we held an open tournament at Kingsdown Sports Centre in April, where over 60 entries across men’s, ladies and mixed doubles played for prize money, trophies and a Beaufort Club badminton top.

Close to 100 games were played across 6 hours, with many playing both level and mixed doubles. There were many great rallies and close games, but only one winner can emerge from each discipline.

Dinner Dance!

In addition to the tournament, we organised a centenary dinner dance which was held at The Bristol Hotel in May.

The turnout was great, with over 80 people attending the evening from all three sections as well as previous members of the club.

The evening kicked off with our club chairman (Nigel) talking about the club’s history to where we are today. We then enjoyed a three-course meal whilst being entertained by a magician. After everyone had their fill, we had the delight of listening and dancing to a local band, Limted Edition, until it was time to go home.

With a record 440 players taking part in this year’s All England Open Masters, including over 150 Danish players, this is a prestigious event in the Masters Calendar. 11 players from Avon travelled to Hatfield to take part with varying degrees of success. Mike Cox, with partner Jim Garrett (Kent) won Gold at 70+ men’s doubles, finishing the season as an unbeaten partnership, having come through a 3 setter in the final 21-15,16-21,21-15 against the Kent partnership of Ian Brothers and Ray Sharp.

Joanna Elson and Val O’Neill (below) took the Gold at 70+ women’s doubles in a very tight all English final, against Hampshire’s Linda Coombes and Diane Fawn, 21-19, 22-20.

Also Joanna playing 70+ mixed doubles with partner Ken Tantum (Notts) was involved in a tough final against the top Danish pairing of Per Dabelsteen and Irene Sterlie but had to settle for Silver losing this 3 setter 17-21,21-19,13-21

A special event today in memory of a special person.

Coaching Opportunities

Team Bristol Badminton club is looking for a coach to support their new club including a group of enthusiastic junior players. Weekly sessions take place on Wednesday evenings 6 – 8 pm at Brunel Academy, Speedwell Road, BS15 1NU.  Sessions will recommence on 10th January and rate of pay £20/25 per hour. Coaching Course Bursary

Coaching bursaries are available. Those interested in a coach education bursary will need to complete an application form (attached) and have paid for the course up front. Applicants will need to demonstrate how they meet the criteria outlined on the form – all applications will be assessed by the Education and Training Team at Badminton England. Only those that meet the criteria will be accepted. We particularly welcome applications from female coaches.
